Delbert James Scheid

Delbert James Scheid, age 96, was called by our Lord to His heavenly kingdom on August 11, 2024, at Good Samaritan Hospice.

Del was the most fantastic husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great great grandfather. He was loved by all his family, including nieces, nephews and cousins and his many friends.

Del was born on September 12, 1927, on a farm near Netawaka, Jackson County, Kansas, to parents: Alfred Delbert Scheid and Lillie Dean (Chiles) Scheid. He attended Lawn Ridge country grade school, and Whiting, Kansas, high school, graduating in 1945. He volunteered for military service after high school, and was a World War II veteran. He was trained to be a medical corpsman in San Diego, CA, and assigned to work at the Navy hospital in San Francisco where he served until receiving an honorable discharge from the military.

Del attended Kansas University and graduated with a BA degree from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences in 1951. He married the love of his life, Agnes White, on 12-1-51, and celebrated 72 years of marriage. They had 4 children while living in Lawrence, KS. In 1954 he returned to KU and earned a degree in Petroleum and Chemical Engineering.

After graduation, he and the family moved in 1959 to Chicago Heights, Illinois, and Del worked for Dow Chemical, then for Standard Oil of Indiana. The family moved in 1962 to Matteson, Illinois, where Del and Agnes lived for 45 years, and he joined the Kiwanis Club to support many community needs, as well as participating in the local softball league for many years. He ended his work career working for Conoco (Conoco Phillips), retiring in 1986. He then served on the Matteson Police and Fire Board for several years in the 1990s. For Conoco, he was a salesman for the oil and grease division, working with the steel mills and other large manufacturing companies, analyzing the needs for their specific machinery. His territory included most of Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin, with occasional trips to Pittsburg, PA, for assisting with the petroleum needs for the steel mills there.

Del and Agnes moved to Hot Springs Village in May of 2007, and enjoyed the warmer weather and supportive community. Del also loved sports. He played baseball and basketball in high school, with many of his basketball teams earning championships. He was a bowler, golfer, and lawn bowler.

All of his life he was a social and “people person” always wanting to know the background and life story of everyone he met. He was baptized in the Catholic Church in 2002, was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and a Knights of Columbus member at Sacred Heart. As a Knight, he was very active in all of their church activities and charitable works, always ready to help when needed.

Del is survived by his wife, Agnes, sons Randy and Kevin Scheid, and daughter Renee Lane. Son Stanley Scheid predeceased him in April 2024. Other survivors include daughter-in-law Kathy Scheid, 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren, plus many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be held at Sacred Heart Church, with visitation on Friday, August 16th, from 6 to 8 pm at Sacred Heart church, followed by Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, Aug. 17th, at Sacred Heart at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to American Heart Assoc., Sacred Heart Catholic Church, or the charity of your choice.

Arrangements were made and directed through CedarVale Funeral Home inside the Hot Springs Village.
