Richard Douglas Sloan

Richard Douglas Sloan, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died suddenly at his home on July 11, 2023.

Richard was born to Ralph Douglas Sloan and Martha Holliday Sloan in Kansas City, Missouri on May 18, 1944. Richard was preceded in death by his parents.

Richard is survived by his wife, Donna Skidmore Sloan, of almost 38 years. They met at Rueben’s, a restaurant/bar in Arlington, Texas in November of 1983. The bar played music and had a small dance floor. He asked Donna to dance and they have been together ever since. They married October 1, 1985.

Richard is also survived by his “blended” family of four children: Dwight Douglas Sloan and wife, Kristie Sloan, of Olathe, Kansas; Amy Sloan Perry and husband, Jeff Perry, of Belton, Missouri; Darla Duncan Deter and husband, Sam Deter, of Branson, Missouri; and Bradley Lane Duncan and wife, Tammy Duncan, of Dallas, Texas. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren.

Richard loved his family and they loved him. He was the best granddaddy.

Richard was a member of Village United Methodist Church.

A proud Air Force veteran, Richard’s post-military career was spent in data processing with the Sears family of companies in Kansas City, Missouri; Dallas, Texas (where he and Donna met); and Chicago, Illinois. He still kept in touch with many of his former colleagues.

Richard and Donna had twenty-four wonderful years in retirement. They travelled extensively with friends, family and just the two of them.

Richard loved fishing. He and Donna lived on Lake Balboa in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. He fished every day, weather permitting, and caught some nice fish. Sometimes he caught nothing, but just loved casting out his line anyway.

Richard also enjoyed playing golf with his friends at Diamante and his wife, Donna.

Everyone knew about the “Richard” stories. They would all grab another glass of wine because it would take a while for him to tell the story!

A Celebration of Richard’s Life will be held at a later date.
